Background

Every incidence of an ancestor surname published in the Hampshire Genealogical Society magazine (EXCEPT those in the Surname Interests pages) has been alphabetically indexed for many years now, so that if an article has been published on your family name or it was featured at all in our magazine, it can be located.

The Surname Index up to volume 28 can be purchased from the HGS Office. Volumes 1 - 25 are available on microfiche with volumes 26, 27 and 28 currently sold as separate booklets only. Please refer to our miscellaneous publications list.

The indexing was brought up to date with Volumes 29, 30 and 31 (to March 2005 HFH) completed by member Christine Akehurst - although these have never been published.

The Executive Committee has decided that the surname index to the latter three volumes 29 - 31 only (not actual articles) should be made available on the HGS website free to all. Why not check out your name of interest?

A surname being included in this index may mean an entire article has been written or might simply be one instance where the name occurred. Whatever the reason for its inclusion, it may be a snippet or a whole mass of information you were previously unaware of.

Magazine Back Copies

Back copies of magazines or reprints of articles are available from the HGS Office. Please note that articles may NOT be reproduced anywhere except with the written permission of the Hampshire Genealogical Society Editor.

If you want a particular back copy of the journal from unused stock, write to the HGS Office with your cheque for £1 per copy plus postage If this proves unsuccessful then email/write to the editor who will publish specific edition REQUESTS only as a service to members where space allows. We operate a specific page reprinting service for members through the Hampshire Genealogical Society Office at a small cost.

To download a file to search, there are two methods:

• Simply right-click on the DOWNLOAD icon in the table above, choose "Save Link as.." from the right-click menu, then simply save the RTF file to your computer.
• Alternatively, left-click on the Download icon to open the RTF data file in your browser window, then choose "File>Save As" from the File drop-down menu, and save the file under either the proposed filename or one of your own choosing. Please note that the conditions of use will still apply to the data under any file name.
