Hampshire Genealogical Society HGS BURIAL INDEX CD UPGRADES

The Hampshire Burial Index (HCD0001) on CD was shipped at Version 3 from February 2004. No updates have been identified since that time.

Background to the Upgrade

The Hampshire Burial Index (HCD0001) on CD was shipped at Version 1.0.0. Although pre-release testing had found many areas for improvement and errors that were corrected, unfortunately a problem with the "Search by Parish" facility was not spotted. This means that due to the indexing method used, when certain parishes are selected, the data for an alternative parish is displayed. This software fault has made an upgrade necessary.

Note: Access table outputs and the full functionality of the "Search for Individual" are not affected by this problem.

• A page was identified as missing from Rowner. A text file can be downloaded that allows the separate viewing of the individuals. It is available from the Upgrade screen accessed from the front screen of the Burial Index or from the download below. The text file is an integral part of the V2.0.9 software upgrade and does not need to be downloaded separately. However it can be downloaded if you do not wish to upgrade to V2.0.9.
• Information was identified as either missing or incorrect from Christchurch. A text file can be downloaded that allows the separate viewing of the individuals. It is available from the Upgrade screen accessed from the front screen of the Burial Index or from the download below. The text file is NOT an integral part of the V2.0.9 software upgrade and needs to be downloaded separately. It can be downloaded if you do not wish to upgrade to V2.0.9.

Version 2.0.9 of the BI is available online as shown in the following table:

Just double-click on the file you have downloaded, and the automatic upgrade will be performed. If the upgrade cannot find the original version of the programme, no changes will be made. Further installation details and how to cope with certain error messages is available.

To download a supplementary data file, there are two methods:

• Simply right-click on the DOWNLOAD icon in the table above, choose "Save Link as.." from the right-click menu, then simply save in the Program Files\Hampshire GS folder, or wherever you have installed the program files.
• Alternatively, left-click on the Download icon to open the supplementary data in your browser window, then choose "File>Save As" from the File drop-down menu, and save the file under the proposed filename, or if one is not automatically proposed, use the Associated Filename in the table above. NOTE: It is essential to include the hbi and the underscore character as shown above for the programme to recognise the file when downloaded.

If you are uncertain of what to do, or feel unsafe with downloading files from us, you may continue as you are and use the following table as the work-around for searching for burials by parish.
 

Alternatively, you may input a blank person search, a blank date, enter the parish name from the drop down list, and then the search will be performed, for that parish. Note: this will take longer and no count of the number of records found is displayed.

If you do not wish to download the upgrades or supplementary data from the links above, simply send a blank floppy disc together with an SAE to the HGS office, and we will send you the upgrade by return of post.
